Check out availability at Hotel Odysseas – Polyhrono, Halkidiki, Greece:
From Polychrono you can be on a beach in minutes, in a mountain village for lunch, or on the road for a big day out. If you like planning everything, great. If you prefer to decide after breakfast, also great. We have seen guests do both and still come back with the same happy, salty hair.
Mount Athos Peninsula is just 90 kilometres from Polychrono. You can join an organized cruise around the peninsula, but you need a special permit to enter it.
Practical tips before you set off
Halkidiki looks small on the map, but in summer the roads can get busy, especially around the Kassandra neck and near the bigger beach areas. A bit of common sense makes the day smoother.
- Start early for long routes like Meteora or Olympus, and keep some time for stops. Greek roads invite you to pull over for views.
- For day trips, keep water, hats, and a light layer. Evenings can feel cooler by the sea, and in the mountains it can be breezy.
- Parking in Thessaloniki is easier if you use organised car parks and then walk. The centre is best enjoyed on foot, honestly.
- If you are travelling in July and August, expect more crowds. In May, June, and September the light is softer and the sea is often very clear.
- For weather you can check the official HNMS forecast here: https://www.hnms.gr/. Conditions change quickly on the coast.
THESSALONIKI
POPULATION 1.200.000
It is the largest city centre in Northern Greece and is named after the sister of Alexander the Great. It is a city that lives night and day and where you can enjoy your meals by the sea or your coffee just beside the white tower, landmark and ornament of the city. You can also visit Byzantine churches, Roman monuments, and the archaeological museum, where there are treasures and discoveries of ancient Macedonia. Meet the real nightlife of Greece by favourite places with popular Greek music or European. Do not forget to buy in the city centre or at the shopping centres that come to the city of Halkidiki.
How to reach it and what to expect
Most guests go by car. It is a straightforward drive from Kassandra, but allow extra time in the morning and again late afternoon in peak season. If you do not fancy driving in a big city, you can also look at the intercity buses from Halkidiki to Thessaloniki and then use taxis or walking in the centre. The seafront promenade is flat and easy, good for families and older travellers too.
Ideas for a full day in the city
- Walk from the waterfront up to Aristotelous Square, then back down for a late lunch by the sea. Simple and very Thessaloniki.
- For history lovers, mix Roman and Byzantine sites with a museum visit. The layers of the city are what make it special.
- Stay into the evening for the atmosphere. The city has its own rhythm, noisy in a good way, and the food scene is strong.
If you want official information on sights and events, the municipality has useful updates: https://thessaloniki.gr/. It is worth checking if there are road closures or festivals on the day you plan to go.
VERGINA
At a distance of 180 kilometres from the hotel, this daily excursion transports you to the time of Alexander the Great and the Spur ÉÉ. Among other things, you can visit the tomb of the incendiary ÉÉ and the museum, which hosts the treasures found in the tombs and the old ones; Aiges the first capital of the Macedonian kingdom.
Why guests love Vergina
Vergina is one of those places that stays with you. Even if you are not a big museum person, the setting and the story pull you in. It suits couples, families with older kids, and anyone who likes ancient history without the crowds of the islands.
- Go with comfortable shoes. You will be on your feet and you want to take your time.
- Plan a relaxed lunch stop on the way back. The countryside around Imathia is calm and green.
- In summer it can be warm in the middle of the day, so a morning start feels better.
For background and context, the UNESCO page is a good reference: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/780/. Always check opening details before you go, as they can change with seasons.
METEORA
A popular but distant destination. It is 340 kilometres from the hotel, so a daily organized excursion is recommended. Near the city of Kalambaka and on the steep cliffs you can visit six monasteries open to the public. The Monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ, the Convent of the Holly Trinity, the Monastery of Saint Nicolas, the Convent of Saint Varlaam, the Convent of Saint Rousanos and finally the Convent of Saint Stephen.
What the day feels like
Meteora is big scenery. The rocks rise suddenly and the monasteries look like they are floating. It is a long day from Kassandra, yes, but guests who go rarely regret it. If you are travelling with small children, think carefully about the pace. There are steps, viewpoints, and a lot of stopping and starting.
Good to know before you visit
- Dress respectfully for monasteries. Shoulders covered is the usual expectation, and some sites have wraps if needed.
- Bring a light jumper even in summer. Up on the rocks the wind can surprise you, and it feels cooler than the coast.
- Photography is wonderful at the viewpoints, but do not rush. The magic is in sitting for a minute and watching the light change.
Because it is a protected and living religious area, rules can vary. The official UNESCO listing is the safest place to read up: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/455/.
MOUNT OLYMPUS
It is the highest mount in Greece and it is at a distance of 190 kilometres from the hotel. It used to be the residence of the 12 Olympic gods of Ancient Greece. A place of exquisite natural beauty, picturesque villages and the town of Dion at the foot of the mountain. You can visit the sacred archaeological area and the archaeological museum within a few kilometres.
Who it suits and how to plan it
Mount Olympus works well for nature lovers and anyone who wants a break from beach life. You do not need to be a serious hiker to enjoy it. Many guests choose a gentle walk, a viewpoint, and a visit to Dion, then head back to the sea for the evening. If you want a proper hike, go with a guide and be realistic about your fitness. The mountain is not a joke when the weather turns.
- Spring and early summer are lovely, green and fresh. Later in summer it can be hot lower down, but cooler up high.
- Take proper footwear. Trainers are fine for easy paths, but slippery stones are common after rain.
- Pack snacks and water. Once you leave the towns, options are limited.
For official information about the National Park and responsible hiking, start here: https://www.olympusfd.gr/. It is always best to check conditions before you go, especially if you plan to be higher up.
PETRALONA
The cave of Petralona has located 62km from our hotel and you can visit it by yourself or in the form of an excursion for a small price. You will enjoy the big cave with numerous palaeontology findings and see where the Neanderthal human lived.
One small tip from us, bring a light jacket. Even when the beach is boiling hot, caves are cool and a bit damp, and it can feel chilly after ten minutes. The drive is easy and makes a nice half-day trip, especially if you want something different from sunbathing.

Excursions near our hotel
Visit the Mountain Cholomontas, filled with rare fauna and flora. The villages on the north part of Chalkidiki and the old town of Stagira, the birthplace of Aristotle.
These are the trips that feel most “local”, because you can do them slowly and still be back for a swim. In the hills you will notice the air changes. More pine, more shade, and a bit of quiet. It is a nice reset if you have spent a few days on busy beaches.

Taste the local traditional dishes, take part in a safari jeep organized by the travel agencies and seize the chance to see the pine forests and the various beaches of the peninsula.
Small practical notes for the Kassandra area
- Jeep and horseback trips are best outside the hottest hours. In July and August, aim for morning or late afternoon.
- On windy days, the west side of Kassandra can feel choppy while the Toroneos side stays calmer. Ask us and we will point you in the right direction for the day.
- If you are driving to small villages, take it easy on narrow roads and watch for goats. It happens more than you think, and it is part of the charm.
Discover Mavrobara
with its rare turtles just 4 km from the hotel, and explore the bottom of the sea connecting professional diving groups.
Mavrobara is a little change of scenery from the beaches. It is a small lake area close to Polychrono, and it is known for its protected turtles. Please keep it gentle there. No loud music, no feeding, and stay on the paths. It is a peaceful spot for a short walk, especially in the morning when the light is soft and there are fewer people.
Diving and sea activities
The water around Kassandra can be beautifully clear, especially early in the season and again in September. On calm days you can see a lot just with a mask. If you want proper diving, go with professionals and follow local advice on conditions. When the wind picks up, visibility can change fast, so it is worth being a bit flexible with your plans, ok?
Or finally, you can have daily cruises to the blue waters of the Toroneos Gulf.
Daily cruises are a lovely way to see the coastline without driving and parking. The Toroneos Gulf sits between Kassandra and Sithonia, so you get wide views, swimming stops, and that easy holiday feeling. Most trips depend on sea conditions, so if the captain changes the route, it is usually for a good reason. Bring sun cream, a hat, and something light to cover up later as the breeze comes in.
Choosing the right excursion for your group
- Families often enjoy Petralona and a calm cruise day. Less walking, more variety.
- Couples usually love Thessaloniki for food and nightlife, and Meteora for the wow factor.
- Nature lovers go for Cholomontas and Olympus. Fresh air, views, and a different side of Northern Greece.
- History fans should not miss Vergina, and a cruise around Athos Coast for the unique atmosphere from the sea.
If you want, tell us how many days you have and what you enjoy, and we will help you shape a simple plan that fits your pace. No pressure, just the sort of advice you would get from a neighbour.
